I'm finally done!
The Immortal Game by AestheticB: the audiobook which took up the fast few weeks of my reading time. I can't think of another story I've heard so much about and read so little of over the years. Formerly Ponies Make War, it's a beloved classic of the grimdark, mature-rated-for-gore sort.
Okay, it's probably pretty obvious anyway by this point, but to confirm: I've given up on my liveblog of The Immortal Game. It's a lot of work, and no real fun unless there's a reasonable level of interaction with commenters. That pretty much disappeared after a couple of chapters, so I don't have the motivation to continue with the liveblog idea, and I probably won't try it again. I've also not been in the best of health recently, so something had to give, and this was what gave.
As promised, I've chosen the story I'll be liveblogging here over the coming weeks. It wasn't easy to pick a story from the shortlist, but the fic I've selected is The Immortal Game by AestheticB. I'll start sometime next week, and posts will be made on this 'ere blog until I finish all 297,000 words of the thing. (Gulp.) So, I'm re-reading some of the chapters... and while reading The Immortal Game chapter, I remembered why I had so much trouble with it.
If you want the short version of my rebuttal of this argument is that it doesn't count when you artificially inflate the powers of villains while deflating the powers of canon characters. If the Immortal Game Mane-6 was in the Starfleet series, none of the villains or heroes in Starfleet wouldn't stand a chance. And you know what?
